Complex. Coordinated. Thrilling.
This is my day job, I’m a pilot by profession. I was brought into this idea to help document an absolutely beautiful vintage aircraft at golden hour. Formation flying is a real challenge. It requires absolute focus by the following pilot, and the considerate operation by the leading pilot. Add in requests from me, the photographer, and there are a lot of balls in the air.
These are the projects I look forward to most. They require cooperation, coordination, and motivation. In this example, formation photography is nothing new, however, it was a new element of complexity for these pilots. Getting everybody on the same page and staying committed to pull it off feels like a real victory when the images hit their inbox.
